Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Carus served as Roman emperor between 282 and 283. During this brief reign, Carus campaigned successfully against Germanic tribes and Sarmatians along the Danube frontier before marching against the Sassanid Empire. His sons, Carinus and Numerian, were elevated alongside him to establish a short-lived imperial dynasty that provided stability to the resurgent empire before Carus died in July or August 283.

This aureus was produced under Carus's authority at the mint of Siscia.
