Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Carinus was appointed Caesar in late 282 and made Augustus in early 283 by his father, the Emperor Carus. Elevated to co-emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire, he reigned until 285, when he died during conflict with Diocletian. This gold coin was issued as an aureus, the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire since the first century BC, before being superseded by the solidus in the early fourth century AD.
