Antoninianus in silver struck at Ticinum under Carinus, AD 283–AD 285, catalogued as RIC V Carus 295. Obverse: Bust of Carinus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Felicitas, draped, standing left, leaning on column, holding caduceus in right hand; crossing legs. Obverse legend: IMP CARINVS P F AVG. Reverse legend: FELICI FELICIT or FELICITAS PVBLICA.

Historical context

The antoninianus denomination was originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a silver double denarius, though its metal content was gradually debased over the third century. Marcus Aurelius Carinus ruled the Roman Empire from 283 to 285, having initially been made Caesar in late 282 and Augustus in early 283 by his father, Carus. This coin was minted at Ticinum, an ancient city of Gallia Transpadana where a Roman imperial mint operated after its transfer from Mediolanum in 275.
