Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Carinus, the eldest son of Emperor Carus, was appointed Caesar in late 282 before receiving the title of Augustus in early 283. Made co-emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire by his father, he ruled as emperor from 283 until his death in 285. Struck at Siscia, this coin belongs to the principal gold denomination of imperial Rome, the aureus, which circulated from the 1st century BC until being replaced by the solidus in the early 4th century AD.
