Historical context

This gold aureus was issued at the mint of Rome under the authority of the joint emperors Carinus and Numerian. Sons of the emperor Carus, the brothers ruled the Roman Empire together following their father's death, with Numerian reigning from 283 until November 284, alongside his elder brother Carinus, who was Roman emperor from 283 until his death in 285.

The aureus served as the principal gold denomination of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. Valued at twenty-five silver denarii, the denomination was standardised during the imperial period. This issue depicts Magnia Urbica on the obverse, accompanied by the title "MAGNIA VRBICA AVG", whilst the reverse portrays the goddess Venus holding an apple and raising her robe, paired with the legend "VENERI VICTRICI".
