Historical context

Struck at the mint of Ticinum, this antoninianus was produced during the imperial period under Carus. The antoninianus was a Roman denomination introduced under Caracalla in 215, thought to have been valued at two denarii and conventionally identified by the radiate crown worn by the depicted figure. Though initially minted in silver, the denomination suffered from progressive debasement throughout the third century as silver bullion supplies ran short, and soldier emperors required coin to pay their troops. This issue features the radiate bust of Numerian with the obverse inscription "M AVR NVMERIANVS NOB C", alongside a reverse depicting him holding a baton and sceptre with the legend "PRINCIPI IVVENT" or "PRINCIPI IVVENTVT".
