Historical context

Numerian was Roman emperor from 283 to 284 alongside his elder brother Carinus, who reigned until 285. Both were sons of Carus, a general appointed praetorian prefect under Emperor Probus in 282. Carinus received the rank of Caesar in late 282, became Augustus in early 283, and ruled the western provinces, while Numerian shared imperial power with him.

This antoninianus was produced at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Carinus and Numerian. Introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD as a coin valued at two denarii, the antoninianus typically depicted the emperor wearing a radiate crown to mark its double denomination. The obverse presents the legend "IMP NVMERIANVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts Providentia holding ears of corn and a sceptre near a modius, accompanied by the inscription "PROVIDENT AVGG".
