Historical context

Numerian was Roman emperor from 283 to 284 alongside his older brother Carinus, following the elevation of their father Carus, a former praetorian prefect under Probus. Carinus served as Roman emperor from 283 until 285, having been made Caesar in late 282 and Augustus in early 283 to govern as co-emperor in the western empire.

This antoninianus was produced at the mint of Ticinum under the authority of Carinus and Numerian. The antoninianus denomination was introduced under Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by depicting the emperor wearing a radiate crown. Originally struck in silver, the denomination had suffered debasement and supplied the monetary needs of soldier emperors paying their troops. The obverse presents the bust of Numerian with the legend "IMP NVMERIANVS P F AVG", while the reverse displays Securitas leaning against a column with the accompanying inscription "SECVRIT AVG".
