Historical context

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Rome. The denomination had been introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a double denomination valued at two denarii, visually distinguished by the ruler wearing a radiate crown. A sequence of soldier emperors required such coinage to pay soldiers and secure their loyalty. The piece carries the obverse legend IMP CARVS P F AVG around the radiate bust of the emperor, while the reverse depicts a draped and cuirassed soldier holding a spear and leaning on a shield, accompanied by the inscription VIRTVS AVGG.
