Historical context
Marcus Aurelius Carus served as Roman emperor from 282 to 283. During his brief rule, he campaigned successfully against Germanic tribes and Sarmatians along the Danube frontier. Carus died in July or August 283 while campaigning against the Sassanid Empire, reportedly struck by lightning, and was succeeded by his sons Carinus and Numerian.
This antoninianus was produced at the Rome mint following the death of Carus. Originally introduced in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii and characterised by a radiate crown, the denomination had suffered progressive debasement by the late third century. Struck under the imperial authority associated with Carus's dynasty, the coin bears the obverse legend "DIVO CARO PERS" and a reverse featuring an eagle alongside the legend "CONSECRATIO".
