Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Carus was Roman emperor from 282 to 283, campaigning successfully along the Danube against Germanic tribes and Sarmatians before dying during an expedition against the Sassanid Empire. This antoninianus was produced at the mint of Ticinum, which had originally been established there in 275 after Aurelian transferred it from Mediolanum. Caracalla had first introduced the antoninianus denomination in early 215 AD.
