Historical context

This coin is an antoninianus struck at Londinium bearing the obverse legend "IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG". The denomination was introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. In this period, soldier emperors and usurpers required coinage to pay troops and secure loyalty, although supplies of silver bullion had dwindled. The reverse carries the legend "SALVS AVG" alongside an image of Salus standing and feeding a snake rising from an altar while holding a sceptre.
