Historical context

The antoninianus was a Roman denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215, valued at two denarii and characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. By the late third century, Roman soldier emperors and usurpers relied heavily on minting these coins to pay their troops and maintain loyalty, amidst shrinking silver bullion supplies. The obverse features Carausius with the title "IMP C CARAVSIVS AVG", whilst the reverse portrays Fides holding two ensigns alongside the legend "FIDES MIL", "FIDES MILIT", or "FIDES MILITVM".
