Historical context

This silver antoninianus was minted at Camulodunum. The denomination was initially introduced in 215 by Caracalla as a double piece valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown, though it suffered continual debasement as soldier emperors and usurpers minted coin to pay troops and secure their loyalty. The obverse presents the legend "IMP C CARAVSIVS AVG", whilst the reverse features four ensigns accompanied by the legend "FIDES MILIT" or "FIDES MILITV".
