Historical context

First introduced by Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus was a coin thought to have been valued at two denarii, originally distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. By the late third century, soldier emperors and usurpers continually needed coin to pay their troops and secure their loyalty. This issue bears the obverse legend "IMP C CARAVSIVS P AVG" and depicts Moneta on the reverse holding scales and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "MONETA AVG".
