Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius was a Roman military commander from Belgic Gaul who seized power in 286 during the Carausian Revolt, declaring himself emperor in Britain and northern Gaul. He held power for seven years before being assassinated around 293 by Allectus. This antoninianus was produced at Camulodunum, the first capital of Roman Britain, situated at present-day Colchester.
