Historical context

Struck at the mint of Camulodunum, this silver antoninianus represents a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse indicated it was a double denomination. The reverse carries the legend "PROVID AVG" and depicts Providentia holding a globe and cornucopiae, with a globe at her foot.
