Historical context

This silver denarius was struck under Carausius at an uncertain mint. The denarius had served as the standard Roman silver coin until its gradual replacement during the reign of Gordian III, after which it was produced only in very small quantities. The coin carries the obverse legend "IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG" and pairs this imperial title with a reverse design showing clasped hands, inscribed with either "CONCORDIA MILIT" or "CONCORDIA MILITVM".
