Historical context

This silver denarius was struck under Carausius at an uncertain mint. The denarius had served as the standard Roman silver coin since the Second Punic War, though by the third century it had been largely superseded by the antoninianus. The reverse design depicts a she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, paired with the legend "RENOVAT ROMA", "RENOVAT ROMAN", "RENOVAT ROMANO", or "RENOVAT RVMANO", alongside the imperial obverse legend "IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG".
