Historical context

Struck at Londinium, this coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in 215 by Caracalla and valued at two denarii. Throughout the third century, usurpers and emperors required coinage to pay troops and secure their loyalty. The coin's obverse displays a radiate bust of the emperor with the legend "IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts a capricorn accompanied by the legend "LEG II AVG".
