Historical context

Carausius was a Menapian military commander from Belgic Gaul who usurped power in the Roman Empire in 286 during the Carausian Revolt. Establishing himself as ruler across Britain and northern Gaul, he fashioned himself as "Emperor of the North" and maintained power for seven years before his assassination by Allectus around 293.

This silver antoninianus was struck at Londinium under Carausius's authority. The denomination was originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a coin valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify a double denomination. The obverse features the emperor with the title "IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts a walking male centaur alongside the inscription "LEG II PARTH".
