Historical context
Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius was a Menapian military commander from Belgic Gaul who usurped power in 286 during the Carausian Revolt. Declaring himself emperor in Britain and northern Gaul, forming the Imperium Britanniarum, he ruled for seven years as "Emperor of the North". His reign ended around 293 when he was assassinated by his finance minister, Allectus.
This antoninianus was produced at Londinium during Carausius's reign. The denomination was originally introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. The obverse bears the legend IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, while the reverse depicts a bull accompanied by the legend LEG VII VL or LEG VII CLA.
