Historical context

This antoninianus represents a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215, thought to have been valued at two denarii. Throughout the third century, usurpers and soldier emperors required coin to pay their troops and secure their loyalty. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse served as the denomination's characteristic mark of a double unit, accompanied by the reverse legend "COMES AVG" depicting Victory holding a wreath and palm.
