RIC V Carausius 787. Denomination: Antoninianus. Authority: Carausius. Mint: Uncertain value. The obverse shows bust of Carausius, radiate, draped, right, or bust of Carausius, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right, with the legend IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG.

The reverse shows fortuna, draped, seated left on wheel, holding rudder or baton in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand, with the legend FORTVN AVG or FORTVNA AVG.

Historical context

Carausius was a Roman military commander from Belgic Gaul who usurped power in 286 during the Carausian Revolt. Establishing himself as ruler across Britain and northern Gaul, he claimed the title of emperor in the region. His breakaway rule lasted for seven years until his assassination in approximately 293 by his finance minister, Allectus.

This silver piece was struck as an antoninianus, a denomination introduced in 215 by Caracalla and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The reverse bears the legend "FORTVN AVG" or "FORTVNA AVG", accompanying the figure of Fortuna seated on a wheel with a cornucopiae and either a rudder or baton.
