Historical context

This coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Initially struck in silver, the denomination featured the ruler wearing a radiate crown to indicate a double value. During the third century, emperors and usurpers required vast quantities of coinage to pay troops and maintain their loyalty, leading to progressive debasement. The obverse bears Carausius's radiate bust with the legend "IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG", while the reverse carries the inscription "PRINCIPI IVVENTVT" alongside a draped, cuirassed youth holding an ensign and sceptre.
