Historical context
This coin is an antoninianus, a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. Originating as a silver coin, it was distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify a double denomination. By the late third century, Roman usurpers and soldier emperors continually required coinage to pay their troops and secure their loyalty.
