Historical context
This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Rome under the authority of Claudius II. Introduced in early 215 AD by Caracalla as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus typically featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown. By the mid-to-late third century, soldier emperors required substantial coin issues to pay troops and secure their loyalty, resulting in progressive debasement as silver bullion supplies diminished. On this piece, the obverse legend reads "IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG", while the reverse depicts the emperor holding a branch and sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P II COS P P".
