Historical context
Claudius II, known as Claudius Gothicus, ruled the Roman Empire from 268 until his death from pestilence in 270. His brief reign was marked by military campaigns, notably fighting successfully against the Alemanni and defeating the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. This silver antoninianus was produced for his imperial administration at the mint of Rome.
The antoninianus was originally introduced by Caracalla as a double-denomination coin valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. By the mid-to-late third century, soldier emperors required substantial coin issues to pay their troops and secure loyalty amidst depleted bullion supplies. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the legend "IMP CLAVDIVS AVG", while the reverse depicts Claudius holding a sceptre and globe with the legend "P M TR P II COS P P".
