Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus was Roman emperor from 268 to 270. During his brief rule, he fought successfully against the Alemanni and defeated the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. His reign ended in August or September 270 when he succumbed to a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian that affected the provinces of the empire.

This silver antoninianus was struck at Rome. Originally introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii, the antoninianus served as a double denomination distinguished by the emperor wearing a radiate crown. A succession of soldier emperors required coin to pay their troops and secure their loyalty, which led to repeated debasement and inflation. The obverse presents the legend "IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG", while the reverse depicts the emperor on horseback with the legend "ADVENTVS AVG".
