Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Claudius, known as Claudius II or "Gothicus", ruled the Roman Empire from 268 to 270. His brief reign saw military campaigns against the Alemanni and a decisive victory against the Goths at the Battle of Naissus, before he died of a pestilence in 270. This coin was produced at the Mediolanum mint.

Struck as an antoninianus, the denomination was first introduced under Caracalla in 215 as a double-denomination piece thought to be valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor indicated this double tariff. By the mid-to-late third century, the denomination suffered from progressive debasement as silver supplies dwindled and successive rulers required vast quantities of coin to pay their soldiers. On this issue, the obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the legend "IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG", while the reverse depicts Felicitas holding a caduceus and sceptre alongside the legend "FELIC TEMPO".
