Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus served as Roman emperor between 268 and 270. His reign was marked by military campaigns, including successful engagements against the Alemanni and a decisive victory over the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. Claudius died in August or September 270 after succumbing to a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian, which affected the provinces of the Roman Empire.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the Mediolanum mint. The antoninianus denomination was originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a double denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. In this period, successive soldier emperors required coin to pay their troops and secure their loyalty amid dwindling silver supplies. The reverse depiction features Fides holding two ensigns alongside the legend "FIDES MILIT", while the obverse displays Claudius with a radiate crown accompanied by the legend "IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG".
