Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus, also known as Marcus Aurelius Claudius "Gothicus", ruled the Roman Empire as emperor from 268 to 270. His brief reign was marked by military conflict, during which he fought successfully against the Alemanni and decisively defeated the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. He died in August or September 270 from a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Mediolanum. Initially introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, the antoninianus was a Roman coin thought to have been valued at two denarii, distinguished by depicting the emperor wearing a radiate crown. A series of soldier emperors and usurpers required coin to pay their troops and secure loyalty, but diminishing silver bullion supplies led to successive debasements of the denomination. The reverse depicts Pax draped, holding an olive-branch and sceptre, accompanied by the legend "PAX AVG", while the obverse carries the imperial legend "IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG".
