Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus ruled as Roman emperor from 268 to 270. During his brief reign, he fought successfully against the Alemanni and defeated the Goths at the Battle of Naissus, before dying from a pestilence in 270. This coin was issued under his authority from the mint at Siscia.

Struck as a silver antoninianus, this denomination had been introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii. The coin featured the radiate crown on imperial portraits to denote its status. Successive soldier emperors relied heavily on issues of the antoninianus to pay troops and secure loyalty amidst depleted bullion reserves, leading to severe debasement. The reverse of this issue portrays Spes walking left with a flower and raising her robe, paired with the legend "SPES AVG", while the obverse displays the emperor's radiate bust with the legend "IMP CLAVDIVS AVG".
