Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus, originally Marcus Aurelius Claudius, was Roman emperor from 268 to 270. During his brief reign, he campaigned successfully against the Alemanni and secured a decisive victory against the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. His rule ended when he died of a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian, which afflicted the provinces of the Roman Empire.

This coin is an antoninianus struck at the mint of Rome. Introduced in 215 AD by Caracalla as a double denomination thought to be valued at two denarii, the antoninianus was distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. Although originally struck in silver, issues were progressively debased as emperors required large volumes of coin to pay soldiers and secure their loyalty. On this issue, the obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the legend "IMP CLAVDIVS AVG", while the reverse depicts Apollo with the legend "APOLLINI CONS".
