Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus served as Roman emperor from 268 to 270. His reign saw active military engagements, including successful fighting against the Alemanni and a decisive victory against the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. His rule ended between August and September 270, when he died after succumbing to a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian that affected the provinces of the Empire.

This antoninianus was produced at the mint of Antioch in Syria. The denomination had been introduced by Caracalla in early 215 as a double denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii, marked by the emperor wearing a radiate crown. A succession of soldier emperors required coin to pay troops and secure loyalty amidst dwindling bullion supplies, causing the denomination to experience progressive debasement. The obverse carries the legend "IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG", accompanied on the reverse by the legend "VIRTVS AVG".
