Historical context

Claudius II, known as Marcus Aurelius Claudius "Gothicus", served as Roman emperor from 268 to 270. During his brief rule, he campaigned successfully against the Alemanni and secured a decisive victory over the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. His reign ended when he succumbed to a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian, in August or September 270.

This coin is an antoninianus struck at the mint of Rome. Introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii, the denomination was characterised by the emperor wearing a radiate crown to mark its double value. The reverse depicts Felicitas, draped and holding a caduceus alongside a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "FELICITAS AVG".
