Historical context

Claudius II Gothicus, originally Marcus Aurelius Claudius, ruled as Roman emperor from 268 to 270. His brief reign was defined by major military conflicts, including successful campaigns against the Alemanni and a decisive victory against the Goths at the Battle of Naissus. His rule ended when he died of a pestilence, possibly the Plague of Cyprian, in August or September 270.

Struck at the Rome mint, this antoninianus represents a denomination introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD with an estimated value of two denarii. Throughout the third century, successive soldier emperors required coin to pay troops and secure their loyalty amidst dwindling silver supplies, prompting progressive debasement. The denomination consistently presented the emperor wearing a radiate crown to indicate the double denomination, paired here with the obverse legend "IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG". On the reverse, Fides stands holding two ensigns, accompanied by the inscription "FIDES EXERCI".
