Historical context

This silver coin is an antoninianus struck at the mint of Rome. Introduced by Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus was a double denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by the radiate crown worn by the emperor. In this period, soldier emperors required substantial coin issues to pay troops and maintain their allegiance, though dwindling silver supplies led to progressive debasement and inflation. The obverse bears the emperor's title "IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG", while the reverse carries the inscription "GENIVS EXERCI".
