Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin is an antoninianus, a double denomination first introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The denomination traditionally featured a radiate crown upon the emperor's head to indicate its tariffing. By the third century, emperors required vast quantities of coinage to pay troops and maintain their loyalty, contributing to an ongoing cycle of debasement. The reverse depicts Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the inscription IOVI VICTORI, while the obverse presents the imperial portrait with the legend IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG.
