Historical context

Claudius II, known as Claudius Gothicus, ruled the Roman Empire from 268 until his death in August or September 270. During his brief reign, he campaigned successfully against the Alemanni and defeated the Goths at the Battle of Naissus, before dying from a pestilence that affected the empire's provinces.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Rome. The denomination, first introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD, was valued at two denarii and was distinguished by the radiate crown upon the emperor's portrait. Throughout the third century, successive soldier emperors issued antoniniani to pay their armies, resulting in progressive debasement as silver supplies dwindled. On this issue, the obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription "IMP CLAVDIVS AVG", while the reverse depicts Providentia with the accompanying legend "PROVID AVG".
