Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The denomination was distinguished by the radiate crown adorning the emperor's portrait, which indicated that it was a double denomination. The coin bears the obverse inscription "IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG", whilst the reverse displays Providentia leaning on a column with a baton and cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "PROVIDENT AVG".
