Historical context

This antoninianus was struck at the mint of Rome. Initially introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination valued at two denarii, the denomination traditionally featured the emperor wearing a radiate crown. By the third century, emperors required coin to pay troops, though silver bullion supplies dwindled and successive issues were debased. The obverse bears the legend IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, while the reverse depicts Salus feeding a serpent from a patera beside an altar, accompanied by the inscription SALVS AVG.
