Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having been Caesar from 285 to 286 before becoming Augustus alongside his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian. Maximian spent much of his reign on military campaign across Gaul, along the Rhine frontier, and later in Hispania and Mauretania before retiring to Italy in 298. At Diocletian's behest, Maximian abdicated on 1 May 305.

Struck at the Rome mint under Maximian's authority, this gold coin is an aureus. The denomination functioned as the main gold coin of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD, when it was replaced by the solidus. The obverse depicts Diocletian with the legend "DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG", while the reverse bears the inscription "IOVI CONSERVATORI" and portrays Jupiter seated with a thunderbolt, sceptre, and an eagle clutching a wreath at his feet.
