Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian, sharing the title of Augustus between 286 and 305. While Maximian directed military operations, Diocletian provided political leadership. This gold aureus was produced under Maximian's authority at the Rome mint, bearing the portrait and imperial title of his senior partner, Diocletian, who is named in the obverse inscription "IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG".

The aureus served as the principal gold coin of the Roman Empire from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. On the reverse, the coin features the legend "IOVI FVLGERATORI" alongside a depiction of Jupiter running right, holding a thunderbolt to strike down a Titan.
