RIC V Diocletian 222. Denomination: Antoninianus. Authority: Maximian. Mint: Ticinum. The obverse shows bust of Diocletian, radiate, draped, right, or bust of Diocletian, radiate, draped, cuirassed, right, or bust of Diocletian, radiate, cuirassed, right, with the legend IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG.

The reverse shows jupiter, standing left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and sceptre in left hand; sometimes at foot, eagle, with the legend IOVI CONSERVAT.

Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having previously been Caesar from 285 to 286. He held the rank of Augustus alongside his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian. Maximian spent much of his reign campaigning along the Rhine frontier and suppressed internal uprisings, eventually retiring to Italy before abdicating at Diocletian's behest in 305.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the Ticinum mint under the authority of Maximian for Diocletian. First introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD, the antoninianus was a denomination valued at two denarii, distinguished by depicting the emperor wearing a radiate crown. The coin bears the obverse legend "IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG" and features Jupiter on the reverse alongside the legend "IOVI CONSERVAT".
