Historical context

Proclaimed emperor by his troops following the deaths of Emperor Carus and Numerian, he defeated Carinus at the Battle of the Margus. Diocletian stabilized the Roman Empire, later establishing the Tetrarchy alongside Maximian, Galerius, and Constantius, while reigning in the East as the senior Augustus.

This gold aureus was produced at the mint of Cyzicus. The aureus functioned as the main gold coin of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD, having been standardized during the Empire. The obverse presents Diocletian with the legend IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG, while the reverse depicts Jupiter holding a sceptre and Victory on a globe, accompanied by the inscription IOVI CONSERVATORI.
