Historical context
Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having been proclaimed emperor by troops following the deaths of Carus and Numerian. Known by the nickname Jovius, he governed the Eastern Empire as senior Augustus within the Tetrarchy, establishing a bureaucratic administration and securing the imperial borders.
This gold coin is an aureus struck at the mint of Cyzicus. The aureus functioned as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD. The obverse features the imperial portrait with the title "IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG", while the reverse invokes Jupiter through the legend "IOVI CONSERVATORI AVG", depicting the deity holding a sceptre alongside either a Victory on a globe or a thunderbolt, accompanied by an eagle with a wreath.
