Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, having previously held the title of Caesar from 285 to 286. Throughout his tenure as Augustus, he shared the title with his co-emperor and superior, Diocletian. Operating primarily from his residence at Trier and across northern frontiers, Maximian conducted extensive military campaigns, including operations suppressing rebels in Gaul and countering Germanic tribes along the Rhine.

Struck at the mint of Lugdunum under Maximian's authority, this silver antoninianus was produced for circulation within the Roman monetary system, where the radiate crown denoted a double denomination valued at two denarii. The issue depicts Diocletian on the obverse with the legend "IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "IOVI AVGG" alongside an image of Jupiter seated left, holding a sceptre and Victory on a globe.
