Historical context
Maximian served as Roman emperor alongside his co-emperor Diocletian, holding the rank of Caesar from 285 to 286 and Augustus from 286 to 305. Nicknamed Herculius, he took charge of military operations in the western provinces, suppressing the Bagaudae rebels in Gaul in late 285 and fighting Germanic tribes along the Rhine frontier between 285 and 288 before abdicating in 305.
Produced at the Lugdunum mint, this coin is an antoninianus, a denomination thought to have been valued at two denarii. Introduced as a double denomination distinguished by the emperor wearing a radiate crown, the antoninianus underwent progressive debasement throughout the third century until ceasing production following late third-century monetary reforms. The reverse legend "HERCVLI INVICTO AVGG" accompanies a depiction of Hercules carrying a club, a lion's skin, and Victory on a globe, reflecting the emperor's divine association as Herculius.
