Historical context
Maximian, full name Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus, ruled the Roman Empire alongside Diocletian, serving as Caesar from 285 to 286 and as Augustus from 286 to 305. Nicknamed Herculius, Maximian took charge of extensive military operations, suppressing the Bagaudae in Gaul and campaigning against Germanic tribes along the Rhine before abdicating in 305.
Produced at the Ticinum mint, this silver antoninianus was a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in 215 AD, thought to be valued at two denarii. The coin portrays Maximian wearing a radiate crown, the characteristic mark of this double denomination. The reverse design bears the legend "HERCVLI CONSERVAT" and depicts Hercules, who leans upon his club with a lion's skin draped over a rock, reflecting the emperor's traditional associations with the hero.
